Dear all,
Book Week is always a very important event in the life of the school, and this year’s theme, Neurodiversity, made it even more special. We all enjoyed listening to different stories and dressing up. Most importantly, it was wonderful to see students finding themselves and their friends in books and strengthening their sense of identity and belonging. A huge thank you to our Curriculum and Literacy Leader, Karen Carmody and the Curriculum Team consisting of teachers, EAs and therapists for constructing and organising this year’s Book Week so smoothly and successfully! Thank you to all parents that volunteered their time to read with us.
This week has started for me with an incredible opportunity to join students on their trip to Pamela Peck Discovery Space. The enthusiasm that was seen from the students was undeniable, and I am sure we will be returning there in the near future.
This and next week, our teachers and therapists are spending very valuable time meeting with parents to discuss students' strengths, stretches and aspirations for the year(s) ahead. As always, chairing Annual Review meetings is a privilege that I immensely enjoy, and I am looking forward to meeting many parents and hearing about students' achievements. If any parent is not able to meet on the proposed days, they can contact their class teacher to rearrange the meeting.
Please remember to check out our Facebook page for updates from the school and our partners.
Warm regards,
Anna
Last week we celebrated neurodiversity through the power of books. Students learned what neurodiversity means and how that relates to them personally.
The library was stocked with carefully chosen books to reflect the differences in the way we think, feel, learn, move and talk. These books will stay on display in the library for the rest of this term, and students will have the opportunity to take these books home. Thank you to the fabulous parent guest readers.
On Friday, we were treated to an amazing assembly hosted by Pearl class, with a guest performance by BTEC Drama students from KGV. Rhea, Mara and Maurice performed a dramatic book reading of ‘We Don’t Eat Our Classmates’, which was an absolute delight.
On Tuesday, Pearl, Gold and Emerald Classes visited the Pamela Peck Discovery Space at Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) in Aberdeen. Students had a marvellous time exploring the indoor and outdoor play areas. The space is packed with playful learning opportunities. For JCSRS staff, it was a source of inspiration for play-based learning.
YCCECE staff were also on hand and keen to collaborate with our community. We have an ongoing partnership with the college, which places student teachers at JCSRS as part of their training.
The world is rich with diversity, which is reflected in the observances celebrated by its various cultures and populations. We hope that knowledge of the holidays and celebrations for diversity in this calendar can enhance our school's diversity and inclusion efforts.
